Welcome to Belize Travel

Experience it all and start with Belize travel! This amazing tropical Central American and Caribbean feeling country is approximately 9,000 square miles long. It is bordered by Mexico to the North, Guatemala to the West and South, and the Caribbean Sea to the East. Belize has the second longest barrier reef in the world and it is a major hot spot for divers around the world. The terrain is flat at the coast and rises to approximately 3,500 feet inland around the height of the Maya Mountains.

Explore the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere. You can also see the best atoll in all of the islands in the world, known as the 'Blue Hole.'

Scuba diving and backpacking is extremely popular in Belize, so if you love the water and exploring new lands, visit Belize!

Belize City

There are numerous Mayan sites to visit, caves, forests, and underground rivers. Don't forget that Belize is the host of a luxurious rainforest which is home to over 510 species of birds and beautiful flowers. You can enjoy the Latino/Caribbean experience and can improve your Spanish or speak in English. It's your adventure to explore!

Language

English is the official language in the country of Belize. Other languages spoken are known as Creole, Spanish, Garifuna, Maya and German.

Population

Most of the major towns and villages lie along major rivers, or are on the coast line. The latest population census in Belize shows stats of over 320,000 made up of Maya, Europeans, Mestizo, Creole, and Garifuna speaking people. What an amazing blend of culture!

Climate

The temperatures in Belize can range from 55 to 60 degrees Farenheit to 85 to 95 degrees Farenheit. Belize has a dry season from December to May and a wet season from June to November. The dry season is much better for travelers that want to seek out all of the lands beauty.

Visitor Information for Foreigners

Visas are required for nationals of the following countries; Albania, Afghanistan, Morocco, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Columbia, Cuba, Zaire, Thailand, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia, Brazil, , India, Japan, Korea (North and South), Libya, Monaco, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the Ukraine.

The Government of Belize does require that your passport is valid for more than six weeks after your arrival.

Currency

The Belize dollar has a fixed rate of $2 Belize Dollars to every $1 USD. US currency and travelers cheques in US currency are widely accepted. ATM's are becoming more common in Belize but should not be part of your planned travel budget as they are not yet connected with North American systems. Credit cards can be used in most tourist facilities.

Entry Requirements

Passports are required for entry into Belize. United States and Canadian Citizens, Nationals of Caricom, and of the European Community Member Nations such as Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania , Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom do not need a visa.

Belize is located within the Central Time Zone and does not observe daylight savings time. The current time is stated below:


Health

There are no shots (inoculations) required for entry. It is recommended that travelers consider Twinrix for both Hepatitis A and B, as well as an anti-malaria tablets (if traveling into the rainforest) and an up-to-date tetanus shot. Make sure you consult with your doctor before traveling to Belize, or other South American, Caribbean, and Mexican destinations.

Water

Not to worry! The water in Belize is drinkable. Tap water is ok in most hotels, resorts, and towns. Visitors and locals can buy bottled water in many of the local shops. (This is usually a popular thing to do)

Getting Around


Taxis can be identified by their green license plates. The fares are pretty standard and there are no meters to watch for. Taxis from Philip Goldson International Airport (Belize International Airport) are of a standard rate, but negotiate the price before agreeing to it. Ask around for the correct standard rate. The airport officials should be able to tell you.
